  • TOSS Aerobatics League event NO1 – a great success

Posted on June 30th, 2009 kevin No comments

The first TOSS aerobatics league event took place at Red Hill on the weekend,
Sunday the 28th to be precise.
Mother nature first looked to give us a kick in the nuts with the suggestion of a southerly, but then decided to play along .What a success, fantastic conditions of 30-40km/h South East winds created plenty of lift. It was a bit bumpy overall. So one had to adjust accordingly and cater for a bit of throw around. 10 pilots entered and the two classes were flown. Competition certainly is lifting up the overall skill levels and a sketchy round 1 by most was neatly improved in round 2 as the confidence levels increased with each round. Overall the level of flying was above that of the competition in January,
so well done to all who took part.

Thanks to Kurt, who was the honorable judge for the day and spent a good few hours glued to his chair while we all did the flying.

The double manoeuvres in the Open class created some problems for the brain weary such as myself,
and the cardinal rule of knowing your manoeuvres, needs to be improved, as a few of us managed to
mix the 1/2 reverse Cuban 8 and the straight 1/2 Cuban 8 up and so mess up our overall scores…
one of the more painful, point shearing, learning curves for the day, and there were plenty more.
Notably Marc Beckenstrater flew his second round with his BEE wing in competition class,
rather than with the La Vie that had hit a bit of a rock on landing and demolished the nose, and flew a better score with the BEE wing.
This was the whole idea for the Competition class and we hope more guys will get involved in that class, as an entry point to the competitive scene, and use the humble BEE to get the idea going.
As Marc proved so well, the competition class manoeuvres are achievable by most pilots in the early part of their RC flying days.
    Well done Marc!

Well done to all who took part, for the energy, fun and a most enjoyable day.

Let’s see how much we can improve before the September contest!

And the results were as such:

    Quick question.

I am battling to understand the issue with not subtracting more points when going down than scored for a hit. Its more difficult to execute a save than score a hit. If you try to kill someone and score a hit but go down doing so you should end up with a -ve count. In the same way if you sell your soul and knock someone else down they should end up with less score than they started with. It also removes the problem of avoiding the pilot/wing with the highest score as there is an incentive to try to lower their score if you take them down.

    Any thoughts?

Sorry we did need Obicanobi’s camera, but the cell phone did come in useful for directing Graham to walk off the cliff face. “Just forward in front of you, no it isn’t there’s a cliff here”

  • Too much fun?

What an awesome weekend flying again, actually the whole holiday period was great. Nice to see the guys getting up and practising the new aerobatic schedule and as Marc stated, the comp class is so basic that all of the moves can be completed with a BEE wing, that is at least balanced and in reasonable nick. We treid cuban 8′s and all with the wing and it worked well. So c’mon guys, get involved.

Sunday started light but beautiful, tailed a little and then got just great towards the evening. One of those great days where the lift outweighed the wind and you had plenty of lift to work with without getting the snot blown out your nose, while your eyes cry like a 2 year old.

Here’s a photo taken on the Tuesday Holiday after a combat session of note where combat on the stall was the order of the day as the wind and lift dropped progressively. By the end of the day we were flying on a fart and still trying to knock each other out the sky, with success as Damian had several walks into the left hand gully.

We laughed so much it hurt!… Even Pye laughed, but it’s hard to tell when he sports his boxer styled poker face…

Posted on June 20th, 2009 kevin No comments

The TOSS Aerobatics League is on the go!

This series of mini events is designed to keep the aerobatics practice and perfection well on the go, to the big one in January 2010. These events are scheduled to run and will only be cancelled if the wind fails to pitch up for the party. The entry fee goes to the professional judge who will be on hand to ensure impartial judging and balanced scores throughout  the league events over the year

Nuff said. Be there and get involved and you could be surprised at just how much this will improve your overall flying skills and ability with a bit of practice.

    ……………………………………………………………………………………..

Any SAMAA registered slope fliers welcome to join us.

League events are scheduled for the following Saturdays. These are one day events starting at 10:00am. The manoeuvres will change for each event with more multi manoeuvre sequences as the season progresses.

To encourage maximum participation we have introduced two classes, “Competition Class” and “Open Class”.

I was having afew CG issues but better than Jeff and Bill who were at least 200m off course. If you look carefully past the tail plane you will see them in the gully!!!!

  • Combat Rules Version 1.01 a proposal

Posted on June 15th, 2009 marc 5 comments

Here is a proposal for some combat rules around which we can build. We are trying to achieve an easy to implement and referee set of rules that give the participants the most fun. The idea is then also to keep a score and running total over a year and crown a combat king for the year as well as individual events.

I’ve done a web search and propose the following structure/rules.

    Rule 1
If you hit another plane/wing or are hityou get a point. (so no arguments about who hit who). In WWII if you flew up the ass of a lancaster and the tail gunner shot you down you were shot down it didn’t help if you came up the ass of the lanc.

    Rule 2

You need to record the hit in your head or on a piece of paper or your Tx. I don’t care but we will collate scores at the end of the session to cross validate.

    Rule 3

If you crash i.e. land before the end of the session or get knocked down i.e. any reason for landing you are “killed” and loose 2 points. This includes watching the babe cycle past on her bike and loosing control, of the plane of course. If you launch and crash on take off you are -2 points except Bill who has exemption to this rule in terms of the grandfather clause.

    Rule 4

If you are hit and crash you do not get to keep the hit point. So for clarity no point for the hit and -2 for the crash.

    Rule 5

All combat aircraft must be made of foam and have no EXPOSED metal or fiber glass, metal linkage is ok. Maximum weight for combat aircraft is 1.5 kg.

    Rule 6

All types of aircraft and sizes of wings are welcome as long as they meet rule No 5.

    Rule 7

Combat sessions will be 10 mins long from the “combat on call” to the “combat over call”. Hits only count if more than 3 planes are in the air. (This is to stop Damian and Carlo as counting every session as combat).

    Rule 8

If you hit another pilot or spectator, not his aircraft with your aircraft, you the hitee (out of control pilot)  buys the hittor a 6 pack of heineken mgd or castle. (If you poke someone in the eye with an aerial refer to Brendon, if you hit an aerial with your plane and break it you pay otherwise no penalty, if you hit it with your TX body car etc refer to Brendon. Any disputes refer to ObiCanobi)

    Rule 9

The pilot with the most points at the end of the session wins the session. At the end of the season (yet to be defined but probably 1 year), there will be awards (ACES) for the most kills (1st 2nd 3rd), a Top Gun award for the best ratio (1st 2nd 3rd), of kills to crashes and a RIP award for the worst kill to crash ratio. The Top Gun award counts the most for skill but the ACES matter the most. If you don’t fly for your country you don’t count!!

    Rule 10

If you fail to call your frequency and cause another plot to crash out you are – 10 points! For the other pilot Rule 3 applies “sorry”.

    Rule 11

The person who laughs the most gets the Loki of the year award ( a bottle of Jack). At the moment its a close call between Damian and Kevin.

Apologies to foamie 77 for “lifting some of their rules”. Have a great comp!

Just so as to keep Marc company, heres where my building area resides.

Slap bang in the middle of the lounge on the lounge table, which has suffered at the hands of an avid builder

Don’t worry Marc, your not alone. Having to sleep with your planes is not so bad after all!

Come on guys, post your building sheds, beds or tables and lets see wher all the magic occurs..
